The International Baccalaureate (IB) outshines other UK post-16 qualifications, new research from ACS International Schools shows.

The research asked university admissions officers how they viewed the various post-16 qualifications in the UK.

Both A-levels and the IB are rated by over 80 per cent for encouraging in-depth subject expertise, but the IB’s broader approach means it is more highly rated across other key educational values.

Nearly all, 92 per cent, believe the IB encourages independent inquiry, 88 per cent say it nurtures an open mind, and 80 per cent claim it encourages creativity. These were viewed as key qualities of A-levels by around half of respondents.

The IB is rated highly for developing ability to cope under pressure (88 per cent), self management skills (86 per cent), and communication skills (86 per cent). The A-level is also rated highly for these qualities, but in each case, the IB came out ahead of both A-levels and the new Diploma, a qualification being introduced in September and billed by some educationalists to replace A-levels.

Admissions officers also value soft skills, such as communication, leadership and presentation skills, with 88 per cent saying this is an important way to distinguish between students. All three qualifications are seen to provide soft skills, but again the IB comes out on top with 84 per cent saying it does, whilst 75 per cent say the A-levels do, and 67 per cent the new Diplomas.

ACS International Schools Head of Marketing, Fergus Rose, concludes:

“The IB clearly equips students with the broad range of skills that universities are looking for and the majority of admissions officers surveyed believe the IB is a superior qualification for helping students work and study internationally. It is also recognised as a leading qualification worldwide, which is important for globally mobile families, making the IB is a very attractive option whether they are considering universities in the UK or abroad”.
