While sharing an apartment or house isn’t as common as it might be elsewhere, it is still possible to find housing shares. This is often a good option for someone who has recently arrived. When you rent an entire house or apartment, landlords will often ask for proof of income, which you might not have as a new arrival. Also, it is common to request an “aval” (cosigner), and if you don’t know many people in Chile it won’t be easy to find someone to agree to do this. People looking to share an apartment generally are somewhat more relaxed as far as requirements.

One of the places you can find advertisements of room rentals is the properties classified section of El Mercurio that comes out on Sundays. You can also do a search for “arriendo habitación” on their website - http://www.economicos.cl/propiedades?p=1 . Another site that has listings for room rentals is www.vivastreet.cl/arrendar-habitacion . If you find a neighborhood you like, most supermarkets have an announcement board where customers can place advertisements. It is common to see rooms for rent published there.

Most rooms in shared accommodation come furnished. Prices generally include utilities and often internet access as well.
