Best thing to do in London is just to knock on the doors, go to the shops and ask whether they have any available position.

Even if I am over there only on Vacation when I get there? I know I have read a lot of people do it that way. What about the need for a work Visa or Work Permits...or is that only for a "professional" job? Thanks.

If it's only a job (barman, waiter...) for a short time, a lot of people are paid with cash, so it might not be a problem... however if you are not from the EU and they have to give you a work contract, it is illegal not to have a work permit.

That is all I want..a barman or Waiter's job for a few months. I am not from the EU, I am from the US. Would I need a work contract for jobs such as that, and is it an uncommon practice for them to employ people in my situation for short periods of time(such as 6 months or less)?? Plus, if I got a job that needed a work permit/visa..could I go through the process there after getting it? Thanks for replying so fast.

Short period is not a problem. Most of the time they will employ people from the EU, but if they pay in cash and there is no work contract (however be careful because in that case you do not have any social care) the natinality shouldn't be a problem... If you do want something official you will need a work permit, and you can only apply for a work permit in the UK from your own country, not from the UK.

Ok. ONe more question. Is the possibility of getting a pub job or barman job better looking online before I go and applyign that way, or is my best bet just to look once I get there? And I met a lot of people in the UK when I was there that were Americans working at pubs, is that how they do it also, or is there some sort of program they are in to get those jobs? Thanks again.

The best thing is to look for one, once in london.

There are not many pubs plan recruitments ;-) so many people turn up at their door asking for a job that they have plenty to choose from.

Hi Matt. Don't know if this will help at all but I'm an American living in London who has worked in pubs and knows a lot of Americans and foreigners who've done the same, and I wonder if you have considered enrolling in a course, like a foreign language course (if you can find a cheap one) or something, and getting a student visa, which will then allow you to legally work 20 hours per week. I am not exactly sure what the requirements are for the student visa, but I believe you have to be a full-time student. There may be ways around this though, as I have worked with many folks who've just done a full-time non-degree or diploma course in photography, etc. for a few months and have been able to work legally. You just bring your proof of enrollment and bank statements or letters of support from you family saying you can support yourself while studying without requiring public funds and present them when you get to immigration at the airport -- or get it processed here in the UK after you've enrolled. Maybe check out www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk. Of course you can always find work under the table, but for a little bit of work in the researching, you might have much more peace of mind and many more employment options. Cheers!

    Melly5B or anyone else...
I am an American interested in working abroad (in a job that would require a work permit). Do you know anyone who obtained a work permit, while living in America, to work in London? Any advice would be welcomed. I find that I do not qualify for any of the standard visas, so this would be my only option. PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks,
    Ilana

thanks for the reply. From what i have learned, you need 15 hours a week of class hours to apply for a work visa. Just signing up for one class won't fit a full time student, which is what you apply for. But thanks for the idea, I think I'll just stop in pubs and ask if they need someone.

    Matt
