    Hello!

    I am Asian and my husband is Belgian. We are married in Shanghai but will soon be living in Europe (not Beligum) and maybe back in Asia in after few years. But we are planning to eventually settle in Belgium later on.

    I only read about the law stating that a citizenship can be acquired by the non-Belgian spouse only after being married and living in Belgium for 3 years. Would anybody know if there another statement that caters something closer to our situation? It would be really nice to hear from anybody for advise on this.

    If you are Belgian, all changes to your civil status are governed by Belgian law. Belgian law applies even if you live abroad.

    The law of the country of which your future spouse is a citizen, determines the basic requirements he/she has to meet in order to contract marriage.

    The general formalities for officiating at a wedding are determined by the law of the country where the ceremony takes place.

    In Belgium, your marriage will only be considered legally valid if the fundamental as wel as the formal requirements are met....c",)
