    Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. I plan on moving to England with the intention of my girlfriend and I marrying. She is an English citizen by birth and I'm an American.

While she has a business degree and is fluent in several languages, and has a working knowledge of several others, I am just a simple working man who, though I work full time, does not make alot of money.

So my question is: are her finances, mine, or both, what is important to the UK Goverment? She is seeking a new job in London where she will earn 20-23k pounds a year. I do not owe much here but also will not have allot of money accumulated before my planned move this time next year.

Also, even though she earns decent money now, with working two jobs, she has substantial credit card debt (approx. 15k pounds). We hope over the next year to get this down some. How much will her debt come into play when they consider my fiance visa application?

Thank you all for any help you can give. Be assured this is not the last question you'll have from me. :)

You have to show that together you have enough income to support yourself. It is not important who earns the money. Since you are both looking for a job, you have to prove "employability", and that is a bit more difficult than just attaching pay slips. It would help your case if she had 2 pay slips from a new job. And overall, you should be aiming for 1000 pounds per months more than the costs related to accommodation. After all, London is not a cheap place to be.

This should not be too much of an issue, but you have to take the repayments into account.

    Tom,

She will keep her present two jobs until she finds suitable employment in London. I will be visiting in July and possibly April. I am already making enquiries as to having employment arranged before my permanent move.

From my research, I think we could find a flat for approx. 900 pounds per month. Even if she can only get a job at 18,000 a year and myself at 12,000, that would put us close to what you reckon we need. The one she just applied for is for 23,000. With her degree, language skills, and experience (she is a former Foreign Office Diplomat), I think she'll be able to find a good job.

My finding something before moving may prove more problematic.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Tim

Don't stress over the sufficient funds. I just got my spousal visa to the UK. Neither my husband or myself had jobs and we only had about 1300 GBP in a bank account. And we have a two year old. You should be fine. We also have debt but didn't include this in the application. We did show that we could get jobs, by providing our resumes and degree information.

I didn't have a job in the UK, because I wasn't living there yet. And we did our application during the few weeks that my husband was switching jobs, so we had to say that he was unemployed. You should be fine.
