    Hey out there,

I am going to move to the UK in 2 weeks and would like to if there is any problem with my car. It's not the thing driving on the other side of the street. Its just about insurance and how long I could have my Car with a German registration in the UK, because I still have Germany as my 2nd home and have my insurance here and also paying the taxes in Germany

    Thanks

    Bye FLO

    Hello Flo

Well, now that we are all part of a happy united Europe, as long as your car has EU plates you can 'temporarily import' it to the UK and use it with you home country's license plates.

See the DVLA (government vehicle licensing department in the UK) for more information:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/...

You would need to ask your German insurer whether there is a problem with using the car abroad for an extended period.

You don't say how long you plan to stay in the UK, but if it is more than a year, the process of registering (importing) your car to the UK from another European country is quite simple.

Thank you for your quick answer. I'm planning to stay at least a year in the UK. Maybe longer.
Do I have to change something with my car when im going to register it in the Uk? or is it enough when I leave the tape on the front lights?

    Bye FLO

OK, you will certainly have to register the car in the UK then.

You will need to get an MOT (the UK test that confirms your car is roadworthy and meets UK standards). It will probably be necessary to change the headlights for UK ones - if your car is not an unusual model you should be able to get these second hand from a 'car breaker' in the UK. If your speedometer is not clearly marked with miles per hour as well as km per hour, you need to do this as well. Usually adding stickers on the glass to mark the mph speeds is acceptable.

You also need to get a certificate of type approval. You don't say what type of car you have, but assuming it is a mainstream European make and not too old, you can request the certificate from the car manufacturer's headquarters (e.g. contact Audi UK, Citroen UK or whoever)

Then it is pretty much just a case of taking out a UK insurance policy and sending the documents off to the DVLA (the vehicle licensing authority), who will provide you with a UK registration number for your car.

Be sure to bring all of your German documents to the UK with you, as you will need to provide them as part of the dossier. When you are sending all of the papers to the DVLA, I suggest you ask for 'Registered Post' as this gives you some protection in case all of your valuable documents go missing!

    Best of luck :D

Does anyone knows where I could find stickers to put on the glass to mark the mph speeds.
