Hi, we are looking to move to move to Javea, Costa Blanca, in September and have 2 children who will be 6 and 4 by then. I am not sure as to the best school for them - state or international. I have looked at the Lady Elizabeth and Javea International schools and really liked them but am not sure if this is the best choice. If anyone lives in this area and knows the international or state schools and could offer any advice it would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Dear MLF

    Thanks for your post.

I have not received any information about the schools so I can only tell you what we have decided to do. As we are not sure how long we are going to stay (initially 10 months, but could be a lot longer) we have decided to put the children in the international school for one school year. If we stay longer then the children will both go to the local Spanish school.

I'm not sure if that will help you with your decision, but if you like I could tell you how they get on when they've been there a couple of months.

When are you planning on moving?

    Regards

    Cow

Thanks for your reply we are just in the planning stage and hope to get afew visits out this year to look for somewhere to rent prior to getting stuck in to the spanish property market.

I would like to be out certainly within the next 12 months sooner if we can secure a few things - like a property and i would like an idea on jobs as both myself and my husband will probably work (unless the 6 numbers come up on Saturday)

i have read various books and internet pages and the whole education thing is very confusing, I hope your move is progressing well and would like to wish you all the best in your new adventure and please let me know how it's all going either via this site or fordml007@aol.com

Be a bit wary about Javea - I've heard that people are sending their children back to state schools in Britain as the discipline is bad and academic standards low there.

    Dear Jo23

Thank you for your message and sorry for the delay - I've been away.

That's a bit worrying about Javea. Do you know if this is the case for the State or Indernational schools or is it both?

Hope to hear from you soon.

    which school did you choose?

I have 2 kids at XIC, and although I know people do move away - that's the nature of families using International schools - they often spend just a year or so in one place, I know of none who have taken their kids out for reasons of discipline.

Talking about International schools in Britain, I can say that the French Lycée in London that does International Baccalaureat, has one of the best result in term of success with French average and 80% passing with honours (in comparison to 20% in France). I don't see any problem with International schools.

But it seems to me that the original discussion was about Spain, and State schools and Public schools, not about Britain and International schools either, so I cannot comment on what's going on in Spain at the moment.

Got to be Spanish schools all the way for us... my children have settled in really well, they are the only English children in their respective schools and they love it.
We have friends who have taken their children out of international schools to place them in state schools and not regretted it at all... this is ok if you don't intend on moving to another country.
You have to weigh up the options yourselves (in my opinion), you know your own children better than anyone else...
are they strong enough characters to cope with the change?
are they willing to give it a go?
are you able to live with the guilt you will feel at first when placing them in a school where nobody else speaks their language? (that is hard to do, believe me)
Good luck in whatever you decide.
