Hello, I have plans to study abroad in Paris this Spring from February to May. I must obtain medical insurance - I think this is a French requirement in general, and I also must show proof of this to the French Consulate in the States (I am a U.S. citizen) to get my long-term visa. I have looked online for more information, but can't find anything that explains to me how I should go about this. It looks like there is a French social security scheme, and that optionally I can obtain private insurance as well. I'm not interested in private insurance, if I can make do with the social security, to satisfy the French govt's requirements. The easiest thing would appear to be obtaining student social security but because of my age (I'm 29), I don't think I qualify. I'm not even sure if my prior statements/assessment are correct, if anyone could shed light on my situation, and even better, point me to an informational site that explains all of this, I would be so grateful.

    Many thanks

Thanks for the info. Do you know if I am required by French law to subscribe to their social security system?

There is nothing mandatory with the Social Security system usually, but things are different for students. You are automatically covered if you are working, claim unemployement benefits or social benefits. Also if you subscribe to a student insurance (THAT IS MANDATORY). Usually students in France have the choice between SMEREP and MNEF I think.
