Hello... I an appointment with the Spanish consulate in London to apply for Resident Visa in Spain (as I am American living in England). My wife if British so I qualify as a dependent of a Europan Union National. But on the application form it asks for the following: "Marriage Cerificate, in cases where documents are not from the EU the Apostille will be required together with a translation of the documents" I was married in the Bahamas so this applies to me. But what is "the Apostille"... is it just a stamp on the marriage certificate? And when they say a translation of the document, do they want it in Spanish, or is English ok too? It just seems strange because my application is in English, so I assume documents in English would be ok. Does anyone have any ideas?

When a document is to go to a foreign country, it is often necessary to have the notarization or official certification authenticated. Some countries call this an apostille.
Therefore, a simple authentification made by a notary, sollicitor or a lawer (shouldn't cost more than £10-£20) will be enough.

thank you for the above answer.. very helpful.

I have submitted my Visa application to the Spanish Consulate in the UK to obtain a residents Visa. Does anyone know how longs this should take? I do not want to call up and bother the Consulate, but it's been about 4 weeks so far. Is this normal to take this long?

Why don't you email the Consulate? I've been doing that for the Los Angeles Spanish Consulate and they respond that day. Their form for that visa says it takes "around 20 days". I'm kind of worried now that you said it's been over 4 weeks. I have yet to apply but will be as soon as my husband is sends me the Certificado de Empadronamiento.

P.S. I married my husband in the UK but I had to return home to America. What visa did you apply for to be able to stay in the UK? or are you just on the tourist visa?

The application fee for the UK settlement visa blew my mind ($500) :eek:h:

Did you use the Schengen visa application for Spain? That's what they sent to me.

    Thanks and GOOD LUCK!

Hello "composerK".... I have a UK resident permit, which I applied for before moving to the UK. That was turned around very quickly by the British Consulate in NYC (took about 1-2 weeks).

For Spain I am using a Schengan visa as you mentioned. I'm not sure if things are just faster in LA, but the Spanish Consulate in England has not provided a 20 day turnaround. I read in a book the other day that it would take 6-8 weeks to process as everything is sent to Madrid for approval....

I love Barcelona. There is always so much going on its hard to keep up. Make sure you check the neighborhood thouroghly before choosing to live there. Night clubs go well into the morning also you will find some markets dont have fresh meat or fish. Little oddities. When are you moving?

I'm living in the UK at the moment and plan on moving by mid-December I hope. I am trying to find the best place to live in Barcelona at the moment. All the areas seem so nice... any recommendations?

I'm looking to spend around £1,000 per month.... I need to set up a home office for myself and wife in one room, so somthing like a 2 bedroom or a loft like apartment would work. Do you think this is acheivable in my price range?

    Thanks!

Definitely. I pay 600 Euros a month for a 2 bedroom. The best areas to live are Sant Gervasi (calle Via Augusta and Muntaner area) and the area near Port Olympico that is called Sant Marti (especially Rambla Poble Nou).

Sant Gervasi is Spanish upper middle class and the FGC trains that are better than the metro but the same price. Sant Marti is mostly foriengers, close to the beach and the new Diagonal Mar shopping center.

Most of Barcelona has very good public transportation, the buses are new and clean.

Yes, but not the smoothest of transactions. Once I applied, I waited about 6 weeks before calling the consulate to find out where it stands. I sent emails, faxes, and tried on the phone. Emails were not answered, faxes ignored, and it took me about a week to actually get through to someone on the phone. When I spoke to them they informed me I was appoved a week after I applied.... I'm not sure how they expected me to know this, as they never called me or gave me a written application acceptance. If you have applied, make sure you follow up constantly with phone calls, as you may have been approved already....

Wow I'm so glad I asked. I'm about to apply. Just need the last two documents from my husband in Spain, that Certificado E.. and then the residence card. How long did it take your wife to procure them? He is applying for the Certificado E... today. Did she notarize her passport and residence card on the same photocopy or individually?

I'll be sure to stay on the Consulate's back once I apply. A week? Wow that would have been fabulous if you'd known. I'd love mine to be processed that quickly.

    Thanks for the update!

My wife actually hasn't even moved there yet or applied for for residency! She is British and I just said she intends on moving there, but will not until I receive my resident Visa. We are both still in England. Believe it or not the Spanish Consulate approved my application anyway. They told me that officially they do not have to approve my application if they go by the rules, but they understand the situation that she does not want to go there until I can. Along with my application, I enlosed a letter from her stating her intention on moving to Spain, and what she plans on doing there for work when she arrives. I was told by the Consulate that the more details you give with the application (in a letter), the more of a chance Madrid will approve your application. Worked pretty well!

I can't believe it! The consulate in LA is so non-sympathetic. I asked them what to do before he left and they sent me this long laundry list of things I needed with my application.

I have recently inquired if the "Certificado de E..." was enough but they stated I needed his residency card along with everything else on this list. I explained to them how we have already been apart now 5 months and were anxious about reuniting.

I am just flabbergasted with your situation. I have even emailed the NY consulate but have yet to get a response from them. I was wondering what they would say and if it differed from LA.

I guess since you already have residency in the UK they consider you exercising your new EU rights since marrying.

    Ahhhh, why me???? :shy:

I dont want to sound negative, but I moved her from LA too, its better if you come here and hire a lawyer. You will have to fly back to LA to pick up the documents, but it is sooooo much easier.

    Hi Trina,
Do you mean just move to Spain on a tourist visa and forget applying for the Schengen visa in LA?

Or did you mean I will have to fly back to LA once my visa is approved?

Sorry just trying to get it straight.
