:headscratch: The trouble is that in order to have a valid E111, you need to have an application form stamped at your local UK post office.
Also, you need to be a UK resident in order to obtain one. :headscratch:

I'm a UK citizen moving to Milan on 25th April and got the E111 form stamped at my local post office but I didn't send it off anywhere for it to be approved.
I just thought a stamp was all it needed.
Today I looked at the booklet and right at the back it said:
If you are going on holiday and plan to live abroad afterwards, fill in the form and E111. Do not write anything in part 3 of the E111.
Then send it to ...blah blah Newcastle upon Tyne.

Since I only have a few days left it's too late to send it off. However I will be coming back to England to pick up the rest of my things. So can I pick up another form, fill it in and send it off?
What happens after it's sent off..do I get a different form back and how long does that take?

it is going to be much busier around summer holidays, and I cannot predict how long this is going to take, but what you will get back is the form E111 GB turned into a E106.

Make sure to have a UKaddress where the form can be sent and then forwarded to you in Italy. ;-)

can you also tell me how long the E111 form is valid for?
i read it was 3 months with just a stamp from the post office. Will it be longer if approved from the Newcastle Upon tyne office?

I'll be going to Milan to live for up to 5 yrs and will not work. My fiance was posted there recently.
I still don't get it....so do I need to send the E111 form to be approved?
Because I'm not going there on holiday.
Or do the E111 I already have with the P.O. stamp be enough for the whole duration of my stay in Milan, which is 5 yrs.
It's rather confusing.

I've actually enquired about the E106 and filled one in but I am not entitled to it because I haven't paid enough N.I.
At least I've tried anyway.

Hi Susan,

I rang them at NewCastle as the leaflet they provide is very quickly confusing.

here is the full story:

If you are a uk resident and plan to go on holiday BUT NOT WORK abroad (within EU or Social Security agreements), just go to your post office and have your E111 stamped.
A UK E111 will theoratically be valid indefinitely, but some countries such as France, Spain, Germany ask for one stamped during the last 365 days.
It will only cover emergency treatment.

If you are a UK resident and plan to go and LIVE but not work abroad (within EU or Social Security agreements), ring 00 44 1912 187 547 (or send the E111 to Newcastle), , and apply for a form E106 that will transfer your full rights abroad, and entitle you to full medical cover, not only emergency treatment. Lots of people who want to retire abroad do that.

If you plan to go and work abroad, you may not be entitled to use it as you are contributing to the local social security system.

If you are not entitled to an E106, just keep the E111 as it is, stamped by the post office.

Can't you benefit from the medical insurance of your fiancé ?

I think I can benefit once we're married, so I will definitely enquire about that. Come to think of it, most company medical insurance cover the spouse/family so I'm sure I'll be ok.
