    Hi.

I'm currently on a EEA2 visa which expires in 2012. My South African passport in the the meantime expires in 2010. I originally came here in 2004, where I met my future Hungarian wife.

My question is, can I, and should I, apply for british citizenship next year as I would have been here for 5 years altogether. Has anyone been in the same boat I am currently in?

Another thing, English is my first language, so is it really necessary to take an english test as well for the citizenship test?

Before you can apply for British citizenship you need to be granted indefinitely leave to remain and be on that status for at least 1 year.

I don't think it would be necessary to take an English language test if you can show your language level, but in any case, if you do have to take a test, that wouldn't be any problem for you, would be?

I see, I'll have to look into that.

It wouldn't be a problem passing the test, but it seems silly to have to have a test in the first place. Also the problem would be that I would have to pay for a useless test, not doing it per se.

But this has me thinking, how exactly would I prove my language level? i.e. usually these kinds of things are dealt with via filling in forms and sending them in. When and who would I speak to, to prove that English is my first language.

    Thanks for the response!

If you have a degree in an English Speaking University or an English speaking secondary school diploma, that would be sufficient to prove your language level.
