    Hi

I am seeking some advice about becoming a duel citizen of Itay and Australia.

I was born in Australia in 1980. I currently live in the UK and I am married to Englishman. I have a temporary visa to remain in the UK until Aug 07.

I have Italian ancestory. My dad was born in Leone, Italy in 1950. He mirgated to Australia in 1962 and was naturalised in 1970. He maried my mother in 1974.

My grandparents on my father's side are both Italian. My grandmother was born in approx 1924 and migrated to Australia in 1962. My grandfather was born in 1920 and migrated to Australia in 1956. Both were naturalised I believe sometime in the 1960s.

Would be grateful for any advice as to whether or not I would be eligible for Italian citizenship.

Do you have to reside in Italy to be eligible for citizenship?

    Cheers

    Stella

    Stella,

Unfortunately, the fact that your father became an Australian citizen before you were born means that he did not pass Italian citizenship on to you. The reason is that Italy did not allow dual citizenship until 1992. Before that, becoming naturalized in another country resulted in automatic loss of Italian citizenship. For more info, look here:

Of course, if you can remain in the UK (which I would think would be allowed as the spouse of a UK citizen) and become a UK citizen yourself, you will be allowed to live and work anywhere in the EU, including Italy.
