The city of Casablanca is impossible to disentangle from the 1942 American romantic drama of the same name. The colonial world shown in the film, occupied by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is becoming a cosmopolitan city. The largest city, it is the industrial and economic heart of Morocco. Formerly an undesirable entry point into Morocco on the way to Rabat, Marrakesh, or Fez, the city is refurbishing its charm as it become an international destination for travelers and expats.
Casablanca is the economic center of Morocco. It has the headquarters and main industrial facilities for Moroccan and international companies based in Morocco.
At the end of 2011, 44,000 French nationals were recorded by the French Consulate in Morocco, which makes the French community the largest foreign community in Morocco, before the Spanish. The French live mainly in Casablanca (19,279 people are registered with the consulate) and Rabat (9,148 people). There are 6,916 in Marrakech, Agadir 3,383, 3,084 in Fez and 2,190 in Tangier (this destination is expanding with the recent announcement of the set up of a factory for the car-maker Renault).
The French work mainly in services and industrial sector (call centers and car industry in particular).
