From California to London: A Lady in London
I’m Julie. I’m originally from Silicon Valley, California, and I now live in London by way of Nice, Providence, San Diego, Prague, Paris, Brussels and San Francisco.
1. Why did you move abroad?
I moved abroad because I love to travel and I wanted to see more of the world.
2. How do you make a living (working? Tell us about your experience)?
I make a living from running a travel business. I write my blog, www.aladyinlondon.com, and I also have websites like www.visitingeu.com that offer tips for travel. I plan trips for people, too. I enjoy it a lot, not least because I get to travel all over the world.
3. How often do you communicate with home and how?
I communicate with home very regularly via email, IM, and Skype.
4. What's your favorite thing about being an expat in England?
I love London as a city to live in, and I like that it’s so easy to travel from here to other parts of the world. I can be in Paris in two hours and fifteen minutes on the train, and I can get to many other places in the world on a direct flight.
5. What’s the worst thing about being an expat in England?
It’s really cold here!
6. What do you miss most?
I miss San Francisco the most. I love the city and the surrounding area, and it will always feel like home to me.
7. What custom/ habits do you find most strange about your adopted culture?
As an American, I find the class system in the UK to be very different from what I’m used to.
8. What is a myth about your adopted country?
The food isn’t as bad as people think it is.
9. What advice would you give other expats?
Be flexible! Living in another country is not always easy, but if you stay flexible, you will do much better than if you expect everything to be the same as it is at home.
10. When and why did you start your blog?
I started it in 2007 when I moved to London. I wanted a way to keep in touch with family and friends back home, and to write about my travels. It has since grown into something bigger, which is great.
It has allowed me to connect with many people around the world that I wouldn’t otherwise have met. It has also been a great medium for improving my travel writing and photography skills.
