From England to Cyprus: A Matter of Choice

Published 2012-02-09 10:11:15

A Matter of Choice My name is Emma, I’m originally from England but I moved to Cyprus in 2009.

1. Why did you move abroad?
For a change in lifestyle, and an adventure!

2. How do you make a living?
My husband works full time, and I am a ‘stay at home’ Mum 3. How often do you communicate with home and how?
I stay in touch with family and friends mainly via email, facebook and sometimes Skype.  I am online every day so always have some contact with people.

4. What's your favorite thing about being an expat in Cyprus?
There are many things but the best has to be the glorious weather.

5. What’s the worst thing about being an expat in Cyprus?
Struggling to learn the language and not always understanding how to go about doing certain things.

6. What do you miss most?

Apart from friends and family, it would be shops, the availability of reasonably priced goods and online shopping.

7. What did you do to meet people and integrate in your new home?
I met other Mums online through facebook and Mums in Cyprus.com and soon after moving my husband started work, and playing for the local pool team so we met many people that way.

8. What custom/ habits do you find most strange about your adopted culture?

The ‘siga siga’ attitude (slowly, slowly!)  and the difficulty in getting things done.

9. What is a myth about your adopted country?

That it is hot all year round and never rains, winters can feel very cold after the hot summers especially when most properties have marble floors and no central heating.

10. What advice would you give other expats?
Make an effort to fit in, learn the language or at least learn the basics.

11. When and why did you start your blog?

I started just before we left the UK in order to keep a record of our move and keep our family updated with what we were doing. Since starting it has evolved into a favourite pastime of mine and I enjoy the sense of community with fellow bloggers not only in the UK and Cyprus but all over the world.

12.  How has the blog been beneficial?Matter of Choice Logo
It’s not only given me an enjoyable new hobby but also many opportunites. Through my blog I have now been given my own section in a local magazine and on Angloinfo.com and Mums in Cyprus.com.  I have been very lucky to be offered some products to review, including a complete language course to assist me in learning the local language.
