Hotels and Bed and Breakfast

Taiwanese hotels range in quality from sad and seedy to very luxurious. Most hotels have both a Chinese and Western name. If you are not familiar with Chinese, make sure to bring along the Chinese name, including Chinese characters, for help finding it.

Hotel beds can be much harder than in the West because of the old Asian tradition to sleep on a wood board. Modern mattresses can be found in most hotels, but only in the most upscale Western style hotels will you find beds in a real western style.

Since 2007, hotels have been rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. However, the old system of 1 to 5 "Plum Blossoms" is still used by many establishments.

Expensive

Most of the international hotels can be found in Taiwan, but tend to be outrageously expensive. These include the Sheraton, Westin and Hyatt.

The Grand Hotel
This 5-star hotel is rated as one of the world's top ten hotels by the US Fortune magazine. Opened in 1952, it has been expanded several times and includes a swimming pool, tennis court, and membership lounge. The Golden Dragon Pavilion, Golden Dragon Restaurant, The Jade Phoenix Pavilion, and Chi-Lin Pavilion also operate from here. The Taiwanese film, "Eat Drink Man Woman" by world famous Director Ang Lee was also shot here in part.

Howard Plaza Hotel

Mid-Range

Taxi drivers and tourist offices are invaluable resources for finding moderately priced hotels. Note that the suburbs of most major cities offer a plethora of well priced alternatives. Motels can be quite different then there western counterparts in that they are often decorated extravagantly and feature baths with massage jets, marble, flat screen TVs, etc. Many places also offer mid-day "rests" for a few hours. Taichung is considered the motel-capital of Taiwan.

The Holiday Inn East Taipei
Adequate hotel further from the centre. Offers free shuttle to the centre.

Roumei Boutique
Situated in the Zhongshan neighborhood of Taipei, this hotel is near National Taipei University and Miniatures Museum of Taiwan.

Lilai Hotel
Located just 5 min from the central station, this is an affordable option.

Riviera Taipei Hotel
Situated in the business hub of Taipei city, this affordable hotel with 112 rooms caters to the business class.

Bed & Breakfast

A Bed & Breakfast can be an excellent opportunity to get to know the people in a different city, as well as refreshingly personal environment to make your temporary home. Though a B&B may be more expensive then traditional hotels, occasionally they are cheaper then the surrounding locations given the inclusion of a meal and the luxury of the environment.

VVG BB+B is an example of such a setting. Located within an older apartment building, inside there is hidden luxury. Decorated in retro style, guests needs are meticulously attended to.

A Bed and breakfast search engine can help you find the perfect place for your stay. Enjoy!
