Two major schemes, the Janasaviya Poverty Alleviation Programme and the Samurdhi Poverty Alleviation Programme, have been initiated for this purpose. They assist by giving loans to the poor to help self-employment endeavours, helping to build infrastructure, and providing job opportunities.
Since there is no uniform policy to assist the unemployed, these programmes benefit those who are Sri Lankan residents. However, one can register oneself with the Samurdhi Development Officers to avail unemployment benefits such as Food stamps, micro loans, etc.
Foreigners looking for support might be better off inquiring in their own government's support.
