Not all hospitals in Panama City and David have emergency rooms. Hospital Nacional, located in the Bella Vista area in Panama City, has an emergency room and is the most accommodating to expats and visitors as it accepts international health care plans. Ambulances are available, and it has an intensive care unit.

Pharmaceuticals are inexpensive in Panama. Prescriptions are required for antibiotics and specialized treatment medicines, but many drugs which are available over the counter in Panama which would require a prescription elsewhere. There is also more flexibility in quantities. For example, you can buy an individual pill for treatment or a week's worth of pills which cuts down on cost.
Pharmacies (farmacia) usually open between 8 am or 9 am and close between 8 am to 9 pm can be found in ubiquitous grocery stores like Riba Smith and Super 99.
24-hour pharmacies can be found in El Rey supermarket locations with over the counter drugs as well as prescription medications.
