Mobile phones, also called handphones, are everywhere in Malaysia. SIM Cards require a SIM-unlocked GSM cell phone that supports the 1800 frequency.

Plans, also known as post-paid require the same deposit as landlines. SIM cards can be bought at any store or mall. The government has made it compulsory for all pre-paid users to register with a passport or ID card.

Mobile Phone Providers in Malaysia

There are some basic points you need to consider for choosing the right deal.

Personal Use: Evaluate how much you use the phone, when, where you are calling, how often you use short message services (SMS), if you use the phone abroad, etc.

Coverage: Most important if you live in a remote place or regularly using the mobile while traveling in the countryside as most companies offer decent coverage.

Pre-paid cards, or pay as you go, are easily available in Malaysia. You can buy them from your service providers store front, gas stations, and malls. A SIM-unlocked GSM 900 / 1800 compatible international cell phone is required. If you opt for the International Malaysia SIM card with an international cell phone, you are covered by service to over 30 other countries.
