To Call Malaysia Internationally

The country code for Malaysia is 60, and the local code for Kuala Lumpur is 7.

Calling within Malaysia

Malaysian phone numbers have eight digits, preceded by the local code or the cellphone code, which is 01. It is not necessary to dial the local code if you are calling from a landline within the same area, but local codes are necessary for any phone call made from a cell phone.

Providers

Telekom Malaysia is the national phone line provider, but it is also possible to sign up with Time dotCom Bhd. Time dotCom also offers internet, and a bundle with their broadband is required to sign up for voice service.

The three major cellphone providers available in KL are Celcom, Digi and Maxis.

Telephone Installation in Malaysia

Telekom Malaysia charges an installation fee of RM 50. Time offers free installation and a free phone receiver, though the obvious disadvantage is that in order to sign up, you must be using their broadband service. Their Home 10 Plan requires a 12 month contract, but the Basic plan does not have a contract.

Public Phones in Malaysia

Pay phones in Malaysia are operated with a phone card, which can be purchased at SingTel, 7-Eleven, Cheers, Singapore Post, Shop N Save, or RHB Bank Currency Exchange Counters.

Prepaid Cards

Prepaid cards are available in various denominations from most convenience stalls, post offices and guest houses.

Generally, the same steps apply to any calling card:

  1. Dial the access number
  2. Enter your PIN number
  3. Enter the number you wish to dial
