To call internationally from Luxembourg:
Dial exit code (00) followed by country code and number

To call internationally to Luxembourg:
Dial country code (352) then Luxembourg number

Telephone Numbers

There are no area codes in Luxembourg. New phone numbers are 8 digits in size including the extension, however older numbers may range from five to nine digits.

Company numbers usually show up as four digits followed by a dash and a number, for example 1234-1. This is to indicate that the call will go through to a switchboard.

Contract

There are several telephone companies, but to be connected you first need to take out an initial subscription with P&T Luxembourg. This is the national Luxembourg telecommunications company.

Once you are signed up with P&T, you can choose a provider. Subscribers must be over 18 and provide a passport or identity card. Part of the connection costs needs to be paid in advance by credit or debit card. Bills are then sent monthly and must be paid within two weeks from the billing date, usually by direct debit or bank transfer.

To cancel a subscription, contact P&T at least 15 days before the date on which the subscription is to end.

Skype & Chatting

Various sites offer the ability to "chat" with other users. Originally this meant typed messages that would instantly pop up on each others screens. In recent years, this has expanded to being able to voice and video chat. With service through the internet, it is cheap, easy, and even better then a phone call.

Skype is far and away the best technology as users can message, talk, or video chat with other internet users for free. Users can also call land lines and mobile phones for a fee. Other useful services include google talk, windows live messenger, meebo, and more.

Public Phones

Public telephones can be found in most Post Offices, supermarkets, train or bus stations. They only take phone cards as coin-operated public phones have been phased out.

Prepaid Cards

If you prefer to pay for calls by prepaid calling card, it is easy to do. Cards can be bought at news-stands, post offices, small shops, etc. Directions, a toll-free access phone number, and a personal identification number (PIN) are usually placed directly on the card, but the basic steps are to:

1. Dial the access number
2. Enter the PIN
3. An automated message will ask you to enter the phone number you are calling, and tell you how much time you have left on your card.
