Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) regulates the production and supply of electricity, water, sewage and telecommunications.

Water

Jamaica's drinking water quality standards are monitored by the Environmental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health and are in keeping with international guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The National Water Commission (NWC) is the main provider of portable and wastewater services for the cities and main towns. Installation fee is assessed after connection is completed. A deposit is paid in the application for service. The turnaround time to install service is ten (10) working days after signing contract for service. Balance on actual cost is applied to the account. The rates for the recurrent billing are published on NWC website.

Electricity

Jamaica Public Service Co (JPS) is the sole distributor of electricity and has capacity for 820 MW, nearly 200 MW of which is procured from independent producers. JPS supplies electricity on alternating current 50 Hertz (cycles per second) either at single phase 110/220 volts, three-phase 220 volts delta system or three-phase 415/240 volts star system. A deposit is required for a service contract. If distribution line/ pole or transformer required, additional cost applies. The rate sheet for recurrent electricity cost is available online at JPSCo websit.
