History

Remains of seven major cities have been discoverd in Delhi. This city has seen a lot of action in the past. It has been ruled by the Rajputs, the Mughals, the Marathas and more recently the British. Delhi came under direct British control after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Shortly after the rebellion, Calcutta was made the capital of British India and Delhi was declared as the district province of the Punjab. In 1911 however, Delhi was declared the new capital of British India. New Delhi was officially declared as the seat of the Government of India and has remained the capital of the republic after its independence on 15th August 1947.

The Constitution Act of 1991 declared the Union Territory of Delhi to be formally known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This Act gave Delhi its own Legislative Assembly in addition to the Parliament that is based here.

India

India has a long history. The first known permanent settlements apeared over 9000 years and grew into the Indus Valley Civilisation which dates back to 3300 BCE. This was followed by the Vedic period which laid the foundation for Hinduism in the country. India has been ruled by a number of empires and dynasties. The last to rule the country were the British. In the 1920s and 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led a movement of non-violence and civil disobedience. Finally, on 15th August 1947, India gained independence from the British and became a modern nation state.
