In Germany, pharmacies are known as Apotheke and are denoted by a large red A. There are two types of medication: freely-available drugs and prescription only medicines, which require a prescription (Rezept) from a doctor.
Prescriptions are very strict in Germany. Even medicines like antibiotics etc that you might be able to buy over the counter in your country will need a doctor’s prescription here. Also note that you will always need to pay the whole cost for non-prescription drugs. Medicines in Germany are among the most expensive in Europe, so bring a supply of non-prescription painkillers, cold remedies and other items with you.
Opening hours of pharmacies are as follows: Weekdays 09:00-18:30, Saturdays 09:00-13:00 (sometimes -16.00). For emergencies, there is always at least one pharmacy open in every area day and night.
