Safety

France is fairly safe with rare cases of violent crime. Crime is more common in big cities with petty theft being most prevalent.

Basic Tips to Stay Safe:
• Pick pocketing is the most common crime and happens mainly in tourist areas. Beware in crowded areas such as trains, metro stations, and tourist attractions. Minimize the amount of cash you carry, and secure your passport in a safe place. It is advisable to keep photocopies of travel documents and credit cards - separate from the originals.
• Never leave your bags or valuables unattended. You risk theft and unattended bags may be considered a security threat and can be immediately destroyed by security officials.
• Though the city is safe, watch where you go after dark. The areas around metro Les Halles, Chatelet, Gare du Nord and Stalingrad or the Northern Paris suburbs of Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, Saint-Ouencan be dangerous late at night.
• Antisemitic or hate crimes have been on the rise, but mostly outside of the city. If you think you may be targeted, traveling with a friend to well lit/populated areas should prevent any issues.
• Pedestrians should watch their step! Drivers can be very aggressive and you should look both ways before crossing the street even on green.
• Sporting events can inspire drunken violence. If you attend these events, watch out for unruly fans and beware of becoming overly intoxicated. Also note the subway can be extremely crowded and create uncomfortable situations. However, reasonable behavior should prevent any issues.
