Before repatriating to your home country you will need to ensure that your household is closed down and that your bills are settled. You can follow similar steps as those listed in the "Before Departure" section.

If you have leases, bank accounts, credit cards or loans outstanding, make sure to repay the outstanding amounts and obtain a certificate that you no longer owe anything. Particular caution must be paid to any financial accounts on your name (bank accounts usually, but also commercial credit cards), as fees and interest may accrue on these accounts indefinitely if you do not close them. Procedures for closing these accounts vary from one institution to the other, but they generally imply a visit to the bank office in person.

You should close your contracts (water, electricity, telephone, rent, TV) if they are under your name. This is usually done by sending a formal letter or filling in a form at the provider's offices. Keep in mind that not many of the utilities providers in Colombia have online procedures. If you paid your invoices through standing orders, you should duly notify your bank.

Make an inventory of your furniture and the goods that will pass through customs, and obtain a proof of change of residence, to help you pass the border and avoid paying export duties. If you use a shipping company, it will probably take care of all necessary documentation for you. 

You may need to complete additional forms, depending on your situation and your home country. Contact your consulate and they may help you with the required paperwork. If needed, they may provide a moving form attestation for you.

You will have to think about school registration as well if you have children.

If you are moving with your pet, make sure to update vaccines up to a year in advance, depending on the country you are going to.

Prepare Your New Home

At the same time, you will need to prepare your next move, including finding work, searching for a new apartment or preparing your house to be re-occupied. If you are moving to a new country, a visa may be required and you should research the process beforehand.
