National Emergency Numbers:
Sofia is overall a very safe city. The biggest safety and crime concern is pick-pocketing, with tourists most often targeted. Pick-pockets often work in teams and can come up with ways to distract or confuse their target. The best way to avoid this is to not stand out in a crowd, do not flash large amounts of money, do not have your hands full with bags and luggage, and do not wear very flashy jewelry. Look like you are a local and like you know the surroundings. Try not to look lost.
Muggings are another issue and chances can be minimized by using the same precautions listed above. When walking around at night, it is always best to stay with a group and avoid dark streets. Take a cab or public transportation when possible.
Be careful of ticks on yourself, family, and animals. Ticks can be found in wooded areas or your own back yard. They are likely to be out more in the warmer months, but can still be easily found on animals in the winter. Use proper repellent for yourself, family, and animals, as some ticks can carry lime disease. If bitten by a tick, see your doctor as soon as possible to lower the chance of infection.
