Politics of Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a parliamentary democracy made up of a multi-party system. The most powerful executive position is the prime minister, but there is also a president of Bulgaria. The political system has three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial.

Bulgaria emerged into a democratic republic after having an unstable party system which was dominated by democratic parties and opposed socialists such as the Union of Democratic Forces and the post-communist Bulgarian Social Party all before 1989. Bulgaria is known to have good civil rights and public of speech.

The first president was elected in 1992, and now Bulgaria has both a president and prime minister. The president is elected to have a 5-year term with a right to one re-election. The president serves as head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces. The Bulgarian president is in charge of elections, representing Bulgaria abroad, conclude international treaties and is the head of the Consultative Council for National Security.

The National Assembly or Narodno Sabranie is the Bulgarian unicameral parliament and it consists of 240 deputies who are elected for 4-year terms by popular vote. Parliament is responsible for creating and approving laws, approval of the budget, scheduling presidential elections, selection or dismissal of the prime minister, declaration of war, and deployment of troops, as well as ratification of international treaties.

The current prime minister is Boyko Borisov of the GERB party and the president is Rosen Plevneliev (GERB Party).

Politics of Sofia

Sofia is the biggest political center in the country with 24 districts that are administered by local mayors. The main duties of these mayors include healthcare, preservation of the environment, and social, cultural, and educational activities for Sofia citizens.

Sofia Municipal Council is a body of local self-government and by the city's mayor who performs executive functions supported by the Municipal Administration. The Municipal Administration is divided into nine sectors with different duties and activities.

The main goal of Sofia Municipal Council is to implement strategies, programs, and plans on local issues in order to sustain and develop the city.
