Sao Paulo is a good place for buying relatively cheap clothes and shoes in particular. If you’re looking for souvenirs head to the Casa dos Amazonas (Al Jurupis 460) or the Galeria Arte Brasileira (Al Lorena 2163). Ceará Meu Amor specialises in lace products from north-eastern Brazil (R Pamplona 1551, Ioja 7) and at the República Metro station you’ll be able to browse local handicrafts in the Sutaco shop.
The FNAC on Av Pedrosa de Morais 858 in Pinheiros offers an excellent selection of foreign books, and both the Livraria Freebook (R da Consolaçao 1924) and Livraria Kosmos (Av Sao Luis 258, Ioja 6) have good quality international books on sale.
Markets
Sao Paulo’s open-air markets are definitely worth a visit: there’s the wonderful Orientel Fair on Praça de Liberdade on Sundays, and the Sun market on the Praça de República.
On Sundays there is also the long-established antiques market underneath the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo.
The Ceasa flower market is a must-see (Av Doutor Gastao Vidigal 1946, Jaguaré), it’s open in the mornings on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Malls
Apart from some local arts and crafts the main shopping focus in Sao Paulo is on the glossy malls however.
In addition to hundreds of stores Sao Paulo’s malls typically also offer food courts, money exchange offices, cinemas and even theatres and bowling alleys. Top of the list is the chic Daslu department store (R. Chedid Jafet, 131). The impressive Clube Chocolate department store is on Rua Oscar Freire – one of the the city's premier shopping streets. Also on that street is Osklen (number 645 R. Oscar Freire) where upperclass and trendy locals head for nature-friendly beachwear-influenced urban clothing.
