You will of course need a valid passport to enter Brazil, valid for at least six months, and if you’re only visiting the country temporarily you will usually need to be in possession of a return ticket (or ticket for your onward journey) and be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay. Children also need a passport of their own, and if travelling alone or accompanied by a third party, both parents must give written consent for their child to travel to and within Brazil. Children between the ages of three months and six years must have proof of vaccination against polio.

A visa is required of all travellers, with the exception of nationals from EU countries and transit passengers continuing their journey to a third country by the same or first connecting flight (they may not leave the airport during transit). If you don’t fall into one of these categories you are advised to contact your nearest Brazilian embassy or consulate for further information about visa requirements.

Visas for tourism or business stays are valid for up to 90 days.

The cost of a tourist visa depends on your country of origin but is generally about 30 euros. Canadian nationals must pay 52 euros for their visa; nationals of the USA pay a 104 euro processing fee.

Visas for business

For business and transit visas please contact a Brazilian embassy or consulate near you. Visas are normally issued for a period of 90 days, at the discretion of Brazilian immigration officials, and note that some Brazilian immigration officials have been restricting single male tourists aged 25-50 to stays of up to 30 days only, particularly in the northeast region of the country, in an effort to combat sex tourism.

Some companies and travel agents offer a visa processing service but this will incur a modest supplementary fee. How long it will take for your visa to be processed will depend on your nationality, but generally expect a delay of up to three days for applications made in person, and 10 days for applications made by a third party.
