Train/metro

Vienna has a large rail network. Its train network is the third largest in the world and the city is well connected to other cities and neighbouring countries by rail.

Its city rail network is divided into the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, local railways and Viennese Lines (Wiener Linien). The Vienna S-Bahn is a suburban metro railway network in Vienna, Austria. It extends beyond the borders of the city and is operated by the ÖBB (federal railways), and consists of many branch lines. S-Bahn is short for Schnellbahn, which means "fast train".

U-Bahn on the other hand is a rapid transit (metro) system consisting of five lines mostly running underground. The network is interconnected with the S-Bahn system. All means of public transport in Vienna, including trams, buses and railways, can be used with the same ticket.

The "Wiener Lokalbahnen" operate a mostly double tracked and completely electrified railway from Vienna to Baden as well as some bus lines. The whole passenger transportation division is integrated with the "Verkehrsverbund Ostregion" (VOR). The company also offers freight transportation.

Wiener Linien is the company running the largest part of the public transit network in the city of Vienna, Austria. Ground routes consist of bus and Straßenbahn (tram) lines, U-Bahn (Vienna U-Bahn), a system which is supplemented by the VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region) and the ÖBB.

In populated areas, trains run so frequently that you don't need to remember the timetable. This has made public transport extremely popular among the city's residents. In a recent poll, 53% of Viennese workers travel to work by public transport. Fare prices within the city are independent of the length of the journey and covers all modes of public transport. Tickets are also available for various time periods, such as 24 hour, weekly, monthly, or yearly options.

Buses

Vienna also has a dependable bus service. The night buses are especially handy as public transport is mainly offered in the form of the Nightline buses operating on all the main routes, generally every half hour.

Trams

Tram service is operated by the Wiener Linien and crisscross the central parts of the city. Tickets can be used interchangeably on buses, trams and metros.
