In Vienna most drugs are not available over-the-counter and you must have a prescription of a doctor to obtain them. Non-prescription drugs like are only available in a pharmacy and not in drugstores (Drogerien).
Pharmacies are normally open on Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. On Saturdays, they are open from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. In emergencies, there are always 24-hour pharmacies throughout the city and a list of the nearest open pharmacy is posted outside of each pharmacy.

With so much to deal with before leaving your home country, (taxes, moving house, paperwork etc.) the careful planning of your expatriation to Vienna is an essential step. As far as healthcare is concerned, your local social security scheme won’t be accompanying you to your host country and, once abroad, you might be surprised by the care system you find in Austria. So, before leaving, make sure you have appropriate cover!
