    New York: Overview / Geography

    Geography

    Last update: 19/11/2006

The largest city in the United States, New York City (NYC) is located on the southern tip of New York State, the capital of which is Albany. It is bordered by New Jersey in the west, Connecticut in the north-west and Long Island in the east. NYC has numerous small islands, including Liberty Island where the famous Statue of Liberty stands, and Ellis Island, the entrance point for thousands of America's immigrants.

It is the most densely populated city in the US, and one of the most ethnically diverse. At the time of the 2000 census, 36% of the city's population was foreign born. There is not, however, a dominant country of origin for immigrants; NYC has been settled by people from across the globe. It is also home to 25% of the country's Indian Americans and has the largest African American population of the US' cities. The huge variety of backgrounds, languages and cultures of New York's residents certainly contribute to the unique character of this fascinating city.

The city is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. NYC also has a natural harbour, at the mouth of Hudson and East River. The Manhattan skyline is instantly recognisable the world over for it's impressive array of sky-scrapers. Due to the city's rapid expansion between 1870 and 1930, you can see many different architectural styles from gothic revival, through the iconic Art Deco of the Empire State Building, to post-modern. The residential parts of the city have attractive apartment buildings and historic 'brownstone' houses.

New York is popularly known as "The Big Apple" or "the city that never sleeps". It is a vibrant and lively city, with many shops, art galleries, museums and other attractions. Central Park occupies 843 acres in Manhattan, providing city-dwellers with a green oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of their 24-hour city.

The climate is continental, with contrasted seasons: cold winters and stifling summers with western winds.
Average temperatures : 21°F in winter 85°F in summer
