    New York: Moving / Telephone

    Telephone

    Last update: 17/09/2006

The phone company for NYC is Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic). To set up a local service, simply dial 0 on the phone and asked to be transferred to new accounts. You will be asked a variety of questions including residential address and social security number in order to set up your account.

In addition, you may want to set up a long distance service. The most famous national companies are AT&T, MCI and Sprint. Again, you could simply dial 0 on the phone and ask to be transferred to one of the companies. Each company has different rates and plans depending on where you will be calling the most. http://www.att.com, http://www.mciworldcom.com and http://www.sprint.com

The phone companies can also serve as your internet service provider.

When dialing a phone number in your local area, you simply dial the 7 digit number. In Manhattan, all calls in the same area have the area code 212 (which does not need to be dialed if call from another 212 number). However, the other boroughs of NYC may have another area code (usually 718), so if you are dialing a 718 number from a 212 number then you must dial 1+718+the 7 digit number. This is the same for calling anywhere else in the country. To dial internationally, dial 011+country code+number.

The telephone numbers beginning with the area code 800 , 888 or 877 are free. For the long distance calls, there are reductions from 35 to 60 % between 5 pm and 8 am and during the weekend.

Phone information for a local number: 411.
