    International Removal Companies

    Last update: 6/11/2007

Before choosing a removal company, make sure of its adherence to an international remover network, like International Unions of Movers, Latin American and Caribbean Movers ( LACMA ), United Van Airlines, Atlas Van Lines … which undertake to supply high grade services.

The company is generally insured with a guarantee of contractual responsibility, but most of them also offer a complementary insurance that you might want to consider. Please note that companies are not responsible for goods not packed by them.

The price of moving depends on the volume, the value of the goods, and of course on the distance. In USA, weights are often underestimated. Don't hesitate to compare prices. A value declaration is mentioned in the contract. Be precise in your inventory just in case you need to claim compensation. Don't forget to bring the invoices of your goods.

As a basic rule, consider that a large house of eight total rooms will require a 40 foot container. A large 2-bedroom apartment might require a 20 foot container (500 cubic feet). Smaller amounts might be shipped by air to avoid temporary housing costs while awaiting ocean delivery. 40 foot container: for Sydney to New York, the cost just to ship the container is around $8760 and for London to New York $8200. For West Coast departures add 20%. A full service move would cost around 30% more. 20 foot container: for Sydney to New York, the cost just to ship the container is around $6850 and for London to New York $6500. For West Coast departures add 20%. A full service move would cost around 30% more. Small moves: for owner packed shipments the cost starts at $14.10 per cubic foot from Sydney to New York, and at 12.40 per cubic foot from London to New York. Moving Insurance for the household goods needs to be added. This is around 2% to 3% of the value of the goods being transported. Insurance for owner packed moves is extremely limited.

In case of damages during moving, notify the company clearly in the discharge letter, then when you receipt the furniture, and confirm the complaint within three days in a registered letter with acknowledgement. If the remover doesn't indemnify you, you have a one-year delay, from the delivery day, to bring an action.
