One of the charms of NYC is that every neighborhood has a unique feel. In deciding where to live, it is recommended that one walks around the various neighborhoods in order to get an idea of the neighborhood.

Some of the more well know neighborhoods in Manhattan are:

    • Chelsea - a provincial charm with its little streets and its luxurious houses and has a visible gay presence
    • Chinatown - the biggest Chinese city out of Asia with its 10 000 inhabitants,
    • Little Italy and Nolita ( North of Little Italy)- where new shops open everyday and where you can find some fresh bread and cappucino
    • Soho ( South of Houston ) - the ancient manufactures quarter, and the meeting point of artists and night-clubbers. Big shopping area.
    • TriBeCa ( Triangle Below Canal ) - calm and residential place where stars come and hide.
    • Upper East Side - expensive area of town, generally safer and quieter.
    • Upper West Side - residential area of town, regarded as more hip than the Upper East side.

It is generally more expensive to live in Manhattan and many people live in the other boroughs: Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Manhattan is easily accessible by the subway.

The following sites have a map of NYC and a brief description of the various neighborhoods http://www.nycvisit.com/maps.html and http://www.rent-direct.com/newyork/Neighborhood.html

    How to find lodgings?

    You can :
  • either look at the announcements in the local newspapers ( at the Real Estate / Classified heading ) or in the specialised newspapers ( agencies or private announcements )
  • or visit the real estate agency
  • or to get some information from superintendants at various apartment buildings (just go up to the apartment and press the buzzer for the superintendent)
  • FLATSHARING : A NEW WAY OF LIFE

Instead of living in a pokey attic room with huge rent, why not try shared accommodation? Frequently associated with students, sharing is spreading nowadays towards older established workers and covers people from 18 to 49 years old. Without falling into a community style of life such as in the 70's, you can choose to share an accommodation for a bigger space, less expense.

Flatsharing is a way to meet more and more followers who choose to break a lonely life, save money or just find an affordable acommodation in a difficult market. This way of life has numerous advantages in term of money, practicality or social life. EASYEXPAT in partnership with EASYROOMMATE number one for flatsharing, offers this service to its users to present all the chances to find the ideal flatmate or to join an existing household.

Note that between May and September, the demand is high as people move into the city to begin new jobs. In return, between December and April, it easier to negotiate prices. Apartments go quickly in the city and sometimes apartments that were available in the morning are no longer available in the afternoon.

    Property caretaking - Rent free
The property caretaking field is growing and trustworthy people are in demand as caretakers and housesitters. Many people now own multiple homes and properties throughout the world. They often require the services of a housesitter or caretaker to look after their properties. A glance through the pages of The Caretaker Gazette reveals that, in many cases, property owners are seeking "mature" or "retired" singles and couples to fill these positions.
Housesitting and property caretaking can provide you with the opportunity to experience life in a different geographic locale and save money by living rent-free. While there are numerous positions available throughout the United States, more intrepid travelers opt to explore the caretaking lifestyle in another culture.
There are virtually no age limits when it comes to caretaking. More and more people are discovering that property caretaking can enable them to live in a variety of locales. They have found that it is a great way to get to know an area prior to making a long-term commitment.

To learn more about the property caretaking field, and all the rent-free housesitting assignments available worldwide, go to The Caretaker Gazette’s website at http://www.caretaker.org
