| | | International Roots and Shoots Volunteer, Uganda [contract] | Start Date: September 2008 (we can be flexible on this date but need somebody sooner rather than later)

Developing the guide takes longer than this, at least one year. We request that the volunteer stay until it is piloted and the final copy ready for printing is completed.
Qualification: The volunteer should have an experience in Elementary Environmental Education
Main Duties: We are in the process of developing an Environmental Education Teachers Guides for Primary 1 (6-7 year olds) and 2 (8-9 year olds) class levels. The role of the volunteer will be to work with Ugandan Education Officers in the JGI Ed. Dpt on the development of the Guide. The volunteer will also be expected to help with other office activities, especially preparing materials for workshops. Depending on his/her skill base, he/she may be asked to assist with the Roots & Shoots program. Apart from the workshops, the placement will be office based. Our office is in Entebbe and the volunteer will live and work in the office.
Accommodation: When in the JGI head office in Entebbe, Uganda, the volunteer will be offered a shared room with shared facilities. There is electricity and running hot and cold water, and there are cooking facilities at the offices.
Volunteer Contribution: The office-based placement is $400 for the first month and then $300 for every month after that (this can be negotiable especially if you are willing to live here until the Guide is completed. The volunteer will be responsible for his or her own flights, VISAs, medical insurance and medical treatment etc. and their own food, although staff lunch is provided on normal working days. These fees are based on the volunteer remaining in the office. If the opportunity arises for the volunteer to go to the field for a brief period they will need to cover these extra expenses themselves.

Status: Minimum 6 month commitment. Start dates-mid-April and mid-October Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
Job Description:
• Support local R&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.
• Represent R&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization’s events.
• Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual R&S events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and Roots & Shoots week.
• Develop and implement a volunteer project in collaboration with local R&S groups.
• Assist with on-going projects such at the Yatima R&S scholarship program which sponsors 25 orphaned children to attend secondary school.
• Assist with general office administrative tasks
Experience/Qualifications:
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: Roots & Shoots, community development, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, administrative support
• The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
• Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus
• Must be 21 years of age or older
NOTE: For those with significant Africa experience, including conversational Kiswahili, opportunities in the Moshi/Arusha and Iringa Regions are available
Terms:
Volunteer contributes to the Jane Goodall Institute: $2,900 for six months and $350 for every additional month. A six month minimum is required and start dates are April and October.
