Calling on the Internet
The cheapest way to make calls is to use your computer. You will need a soundcard,
a microphone and speakers/headphones, or a headset. Those are pretty cheap these
days, and speakers are already built into most laptops. Sound quality is constantly
improving and these days it's more than adequate, even if you're calling the
opposite side of the world on an average connection.
Skype is the leader in this field and works really well. It's
very easy to download and install - literally takes a few minutes - and if you
have a web-cam the latest version includes video capabilities. Apart from
being extremely cool for all of you with friends and family on the other side
of the planet, many companies are also implementing Skype as a way to reduce
their phone bills. The latest version of Skype works on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
and PDAs (Pocket PC).Nearly all programs for Internet calls work on the same
procedure:
-
Fill in the user registration at the Web site Download the program Buy "phone" time (in some cases PC to PC calls are free)
-
Make the call

Pre-paid cards
Another means of making inexpensive calls without a computer is with a prepaid
card. Accounts can usually be recharged over the Internet or by calling
customer service. Some cards also include voicemail, text messaging and
a number where family and friends can leave messages for free.
