In order to be able to move furniture to Switzerland, you must have a legal
authorisation (resident permit or work permit): authorisation C, B, G (second
residence), L, authorisation for student or be in the process of a familly grouping
(see our section for Passport/Visa).
|
In the prospect of the transfer of your residence to Switzerland, you
must go to the local Office
Cantonal de la Population where you are going to live.
You must give within 3 months after you arrived:
- a completed form,
- a copy of your ID,
- two ID photos,
- a document showing your financial resources,
- a certificate showing that you are covered by a medical insurance
in Switzerland.

If you can move yourself and all your belongings – the cheaper this will be
(if you hire a van, it will cost about 400€).
However, and most often, you may call a professional for assistance in international
moving, and/or storage. This specialist will be part of a
network of companies associated with international organisations (FIDI, HHFGAA,
AMSA, LACMA…).
The company will check the volume to send, list specific objects (including
fragile items), specify the way of taking down and putting back together furniture.
Then a preliminary estimate will be established.
On the day of the removal, a team will arrive to carry out the task. Every
box will be listed (necessary to check if any box has been lost). Everything
should be wrapped with specific protection. Containers are then sealed (check
carefully) and sent to Switzerland were Swiss movers will pick them up (a few
days are necessary).
Classical problems are: containers are 32 m3 and the more you have, the longer
it may take to transport your belongings; always check the date of delivery
by calling the company; check seals at the departure and upon arrival; avoid
the end of the summer holiday; and as you have to check the furniture upon arrival,
be sure to be able to read and understand the list. Check also that white goods
are electrically compatible.
The cost is about 4600€ to 6100€ per container (depending
on service and insurance).
You can ask for details of the removal company insurances but be careful with
the limited responsibilities.
You might need to put you items/furniture into storage; your mover should
be able to provide this facility or give you contact numbers.

In order to move a vehicle, you must go to the
immatriculation office of the cantonal administration from where the owner
of the vehicle is resident once you've passed the customs clearance
(no customs fee if the car is declared with the other furniture).
Documents to show are: the Form 13.20A delivered by the customs, the Form
for the request of registration duly signed with the official seal of
your employer, your foreign Driving Licence (for vehicles already registered),
insurance certificate from a company registered in Switzerland, the original
of the legitimisation card, attestation of technical control (delivered
by the technical service). A techical check (MOT) will be carried aout
(cost is about 350 CHF).
