Please Help, I wish to marry a British citizen but I have a somewhat lengthy criminal record. I have three DUI's, two under the influence of a controlled substance convictions, three driving without insurance tickets, and two or three driving on a suspended license tickets. All of these incidences took place between 1997 and 2004, during a rough patch, BUT since then I got my GED, went to a university for my bachelors in social work and then on to receive my masters in social work from a very pristine school. For the past eight years my life has changed, my record is spotless, even for minor traffic tickets. So my question is: how strict are immigration laws concerning having a criminal record? Do I have a snowball chances of acquiring a fiance visa to England? Any input or advice would be helpful before I begin.... much thanks

    Hi Heather- Welcome to EasyExpat!

This is certainly a tricky question. I believe that in theory you may be able to obtain a visa, but it will be quite difficult. I believe there may be a rule barring entry for people who have committed a crime punishable by a year or more IN THE UK, but am having trouble confirming that.

Have you consulted a consulate? They will be your best resource. You may also want to consult an immigration attorney. This is an expensive option, but will greatly increase your chances.

Anyone else have experience with this situation? Advice?

Thanks for the info, I have an appointment to speak with a lawyer this coming month but like you said, this is an expensive option but it may be worth it. I guess I'll just keep searching on line, thanks again for your thoughts.. I'm sure there's a way!
