It is possible to do it yourself however it is not worth the hassle. Just go to any travel agent and pay the money, There are several type of visa extensions you can get, and different prices. Check the time frames to get your passport back. What should be 3 days can take 2 weeks.

Get photocopies of your passport and existing vietnam visa stamp, better still photographs.

If you are wanting to travel they just ship the passport down by bus get it stamped and back again.
