Well, first of all, where in Panama are you looking? The interior is very different from the capital, Panama City.

I live in a small town on the Azuero Peninsula. For long-term housing here, you don't want to go online. Anything you find will be for suckers at gringo (inflated) prices. If you need something short-term while you look for a longer term rental or purchase, go to Encuentra24.com or Craigslist Panama. Or do what I did -- just negotiate a reduced rate at a modest hotel.

Once you've got boots on the ground you start talking to everyone who crosses your path - hotel clerks, taxi drivers, waitstaff at restaurants, other expats you meet. Tell them what you're looking for. It takes a little while, and some perseverence, but you'll find something that meets your needs.
