✎ EN Cambridge cost of living

    My boyfriend received a job offer in Cambridge (CB1), but the salary seems a little low and we were wondering if we could afford it. The offer is 50,000 GBP, but it would be the only income for the two of us. We were planning on living outside of town in one of the nearby villages. We would be moving there from Dallas, TX. Can we survive or do we need to hold out for a bit more?

    The average household income in England being a bit more than £34K (in 2003), I would say that 50K (more than 90 000 USD) is very reasonnable.
    Cambridge is quite expensive in the center but as soon as you live outside downtown you will find accommodation more affordable.
    Things will be more expensive if you grow a family but things can always change for the best. So, go for it, as you are about to experience the expat life!

    Hi,

    I work in Cambridge and live just outside in a neighbouring village.
    Cambridge is extremely expensive and buying a house inside the center of Cambridge would set you back around £250,000 +.

    On £50k and living outside of the city, you would be able to have a very comfortable lifestyle. I earn 40k and am living it up! :)

    Good luck on the move, and I hope you enjoy the beautiful Cambridge.
