It is always important for prospective expat residents of any place to know something about the crime situation before they arrive. Cayman is a very long way from deserving the label of "lawless", but it does have enough crime to bother those of us who already live here. On average, one armed robbery a week is reported – usually of a shop or bank, but sometimes of a suburban house. That’s a lot for a population of only 50,000.

As I’ve noted in my latest blog-post (called “Locking the doors and windows”), many residents are currently up in arms (figuratively) about the fact that they aren’t allowed to be up in arms literally. A few shop-owners are granted permits to carry guns, but our British Police Force (we are a British colony) doesn’t allow householders to keep loaded guns on the premises.

I will be glad to answer specific questions.

Indeed that is a lot. On the other hand I have always been amazed (and alarmed) that in the US it is allowed to shut someone if you believe you are at threat!

Every once in a while, a horrible crime is committed in Cayman that takes our breath away. Sentencing of the criminals is - regrettably - not always appropriate. The link below reports a recent violent rape, and the pathetically soft sentence that "punished" the rapist. It has to be acknowledged that stories of this nature are very often covered up here, or buried under a pile of more trivial news. The fact that only 50 people bothered to comment on this report online - almost all of them anonymously - is an indicator of the lack of concern with which such crimes are greeted by the general public. As a community, we in Cayman seem to have become resigned to such monstrosities.

This was a domestic crime, that the typical visitor would not be exposed to; but still, it gives an indication of the violence that exists here, and strangers should be warned.
