If you need your passport for travel or any other purpose, just go to the Home Office and collect it. When the case worker in HO actually gets down to processing your application, they will request you to submit your passport again.

If you don't need your passport and you don't hear from them by 23rd April (ideally you would), then just send them a letter reminding them of the 6 month processing rule.
