I don't know if you received a response to your question. So, I can give you my experience in the South of France.
In fact, the south of France is very wild (not as wild as Australia but there is still more than 300km from east to west).
Some part of the south are more expensive than others. It also depends on the place where you live (in the center of a city, in the suburbs or in the country side).

By my side, I live in then center of Aix-en provence which is one of the most expensive town in the south but also one of the most enjoyable city. We have a 4 bedroom un-furnished flat and we pay 1000€ a month. In Aix en provence, you can find a 2 bedroom furnished flat for 600€ per month.

If you want to live in a bigger city, you can search in Montpellier which is also a very pleasant city. Prices in Montpellier are cheaper than in Aix en provence (around 450€). You can also search in Marseille or in Nice but I think that you will enjoy more a stay in Montpellier.
If you want a cheaper place to rent, you could go in a smaller city and go to 30 to 45 kilometers from the sea.
