I am considering applying for a position in Lybia and would love to hear from anyone currently living or who has lived there. It is a familiy posting and I would be taking my wife, 14 yr old daughter, 10 yr old son. I am particularly interested in the impact on families: education, social, attitude to expats etc. And does anyone know if golf is played in Lybia?

    Thanks in advance

My wife spent 1 year in Lybia setting up the South African Embassy there. I spent a month there also. It is a difficult country as Arabic is the main language there. There isn't any English literature apart from the Time magazine.

We have a colleague there who has 4 children who go to school and she hasn't really complained.

The Lybians on the whole are fairly nice people. Their culture is obviously Muslim but also has some southeren Europe influences.

Personally I would think long and hard about such a post. For me a lot would depend on how long I was going to be there and what benefits I would receive.

As for golf, there is a golf course near Tripoli but am not sure whether it is any good.

I Lived in Lybia for four years in AL-JAMIL near ZAWARA as child with my family. During that period i had a great chance to study the life style and culture of Lybian people. as i was living in a small town so i have a better chance to observe them as compare to any other living in a big city.
i found them very loving and careing people. i had a lot of lybian friend and i used to go their homes and they used to come to mine i liked their food Kuskussi and Tajeen. Specially Their Elders were very loving people.
but there were some problems too like no English medium School, Shortage of some grocries in the market.
But as whole i enjoyed my tripand i still miss it.
