I hope some you of experts can help us out. I’ll try to keep this short.
I’m French and live with my Indian boyfriend in the UK for the past one-year. We would like to get married in UK and continue to live here. I have been living and working in the UK since November 2004. My boyfriend has been in the UK since October 2004 and his visa expires in 2008. (studying and then working)


Please can someone enlighten me with what we need to do to move forward? After reading the government website this is what we “think” we need to do.

1. I need to apply for a Residence Permit (EEA1)
2. After I get my residence permit, we then need to apply for a Certificate of Approval (COA) to get married
3. We get married in the UK
4. We then get an extension of stay for my husband through a Further leave to remain FLR(M). Which I think is valid for two years.
5. At the end of two years we then apply for an indefinite leave to remain.


Is this correct? My only confusion is do we have to get an EEA Family permit or go with the plan outlined above. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thats for UK nationals and theyre spouses.


Apply for COA,get married and after that you could apply for the residence permit for both of you.

So it is possible for us to get a COA even though I have a French passport and my boyfriend an Indian passport?
I do not have to have a residence permit before we apply for the COA.

Good question.
Because your partner has a long term visa (he can switch it while in UK)I wouldnt think you would need to apply for a residence prior to marriage.

Unless you are engaged to an EU Citizen (not British citizen in this situation!) with a five year residence permit you must apply for entry from outside the UK. If you wish to apply from within the UK in other circumstances your application is likely to be refused unless you can show exceptional reasons why the application should be granted.


Because you have plenty of time,you could apply for residence for yourself first,COA after and residence for your spouse afterwards,just to be on safe side

You might be married by now and if so, congratulations. I was really interested in your question because your situation looked similar to mine at the moment.
I am French and have a Indian boyfriend. We are both been living in Scotland for 2 and a half years and are thinking to get married here.
From you experience now, could you tell me how your marriage went in terms of administrative procedures etc...

Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes we did get married in Scotland. We had some friends and family over from back home. After we received our COA we went to the registrars, filled out the form made a payment decided on a date and that was it really.

Thank you for your reply. I did somebbsearches onmy side and found out what you already mentioned. I wanted to know. Are you going to apply for a FLR for your husband which is quite costly (335 pounds) or apply for Non EEA family member permit which is free. (valid for 6 months) and then for a resident card free as well.

May I ask you how your husband parents felt about him marrying you. Did you have some kind of Indian rituals during the wedding ceremony or not at all?
