Most families need childcare services, especially when they move abroad and do not have an extended family network. As you settle into your new life, you may need to locate reliable and safe child care services – but how?

What should people expect to pay for childcare in Russia? What services or classes are available? What qualifications are required for staff? What are the usual opening hours?

Schools in Russia

Can anybody tell my how the state schools are in Russia, compared to the west?

We have a 3 year old child so in a few months time he will go to school.
I have seens some (free) kindergardens in Russia and they didn't make me happy. What a mess.

I heard (elementary) schools in Russia focus on "knowledge" transfer (like the 50's and 60's here) where schools here in the west focus on self development.

The best place for you to start is with the Guide to Moscow. It offers comprehensive info about moving to the city, including information on School System in Russia.

Public schools are still greatly influenced by the county's Soviet past. In those times, the Soviet government operated virtually all the schools in Russia. The underlying philosophy of Soviet schools was that the teacher's job was to transmit standardized materials to the students, and the student's job was to memorize those materials. In 1992 a reform philosophy was put together to change the laws on Education. The fundamental principle of that law was the removal of state control from education policy.

Russian parents have the option of sending their children to preschool until age seven, when enrollment in elementary school becomes mandatory. In the mid-1990s, Russia had five types of secondary school: regular schools featuring a core curriculum; schools offering elective subjects; schools offering intensive study in elective subjects; schools designed to prepare students for entrance examinations to an institution of higher education; and alternative schools with experimental programs.

There is little difference between child care and pre-school in Moscow. Most child care facilities offer at least language classes and prepare children to be educated. There are a variety of child care facilities available within Moscow. Many are centred on the dominant language, but there are some that focus on activities like music. Prices also range with international schools being some of the most expensive. Most local care centres cost around 5,000 rubles a month, and International School cost about 4,000 Euros a term.
