    There are different visa rules and requirements for people of different nationalities. So please check with the embassy for the latest information. In general, citizens of European Member; Countries (EEA, EFTA) can live and work in Austria without a visa or a work permit. Nationals of certain countries can visit Austria for up to three months without a visa but will need to be granted a work permit to take up employment.     Visa Types

    Below is a brief guide to the main types of visa available for Austria and some of the requirements to obtain it. For a more complete and comprehensive guide, please click here.
    • Tourist Visa/ Schengen Visa: Austria is one of 25 countries that are part of the Schengen visa agreement. Hence, for those interested in visiting Austria for travel or relocating to the country on a short term basis, applying for the Schengen visa is the best way forward.

    • Austrian Residence Permit: For those outside the EU and EEA who wish to visit or immigrate to Austria, a visa application or Austrian residence permit will need to be pursued. Austrian Residence Permits apply to EU or EEA citizens who wish to live and work in Austria for longer than 90 days. They also apply to foreign nationals who are the spouse or child of an EU or EEA national.

    If you are from a country that is not a full member of EFTA or EEA, you must obtain a work permit or visa to work in Austria. Nationals of certain countries can visit Austria for up to three months without a visa but will need to be granted a work permit to take up employment. These must be applied for by the employer and obtained before arriving in the country.
